Re the 9/11 Commission: I was hoping that Condi would spill. Resign and spill. Enough is enough already and here is the truth. Of course, she didn't, but she should listen to me. Spill now and be a folk hero or be spilled upon later and end up the goat.

My guess is that Condi does not want to testify because she does not want to perjure herself and end up taking the ultimate fall for the entire 9/11 debacle. As Martha found out, you never get in trouble for the bad act, but you always get in trouble for lying about it and getting caught in the lie. However, Condi is no Martha, she is way too smart to take an oath and lie. So, she's taking what she thinks is the safe route and sticking to the story, lying on 60 Minutes rather than before Congress under oath.

That may seem to be the safest road for her now, but I would argue that it will not be safe over time. I think it is likely that the predominantly white, male, elderly Bush administration will make her take the fall for this in the long run. If the pressure for her testimony continues, they will give her up to the commission and force her to lie under oath. If she sticks with them up to that point and is later proved to have perjured herself, she will attract all of the wrath and scorn that America can muster up against a disliked, powerful woman. She can ask Martha Stewart and Linda Tripp about that.

So, given that she will ultimately take the fall, she should decide when and under what circumstances to do so. If she does it now, she could become a folk hero. She will be the renegade truth teller, the one who said"enough already" when the rest of the administration was falling all over itself to maintain lies. Since we all know the lies, her actual testimony would be nothing too new, but the fact that she was brave enough to stand up to them, brave enough to give the 9/11 victims families and the the truth, would be big news. If she waits, she will be just another politician who lied and got caught.
