Media Stumping for McCain on Global Warming
I wish I could say I cannot believe my ears, but it's happened too many times to not believe it. I am watching MSNBC and on both Matthew's and Gregory's shows, McCain is being quoted and quoted over and over about how much he cares about global warming and none of the commentators have even attempted to bring up McCain's real recond on global warming which is that he's missed every single global warming related vote in 2007. He has a zero rating from the League of Conservation Voters.
What was really stunning was his comment about the Kyoto treaty: "I will not accept the same dead-end of failed diplomacy that claimed Kyoto." While the Senate never got a chance to vote on the actual Kyoto treaty (the only vote ever taken was only a sense of the Senate resolution long before the agreement was finalized), McCain has always voted for trade agreements that harm the environment including his consistent votes in favor of Fast Track authority for the White House on trade agreements, taking away Congress' power to add environmental restrictions. His support for emissions caps was far less that Kyoto required, and before it ultimately failed, had been stripped of requirements to get back to 1990 levels by 2016. McCain never voted for any funding of alternative transportation and always voted againt funding Amtrak. He's also demostrated hostility to funding research on renewable energy and hostility toward more restrictive state renewable energy standards. McCain prefers nuclear energy as the alternative.
While not the absolute worst on the environment, I don' t think McCain deserves any pats on the back for his inconsistent support for the environment and the media should call him on it when he makes it an issue.

Is there any way you can supply us with missed votes by Obama, Clinton, Edwards and other candidates on the same issues? A comparison would be nice.

Why don't you do your own homework, Louis? You might learn something.

Lou,
It's great to have you back. Please post more often.
For the record, McCain's lifetime League of Conservation Voters rating is 24%.
Obama's is 86% and Clinton's is 87%.
In terms of recent missed environmental votes, it's true that Obama and Clinton have missed a few due to being on the road campaigning, but only a few.
McCain missed EVERY environmental vote LCV tracked during 2007--and many of these votes were taken even before the candidates had to go out on the road.
Looking at the record, it's easy to see that McCain didn't want to have an environmental record leading up to the primaries. He didn't want to vote pro-environment and anger his anti-environmental Republican base.
Now that he has the Republican nomination secured, McCain can SAY he's for environmental protection, even though his record on the issue is as spotty as swiss cheese.
And what did McCain do during the most important environmental vote of the last 6 months?
On December 13, 2007, McCain, who was in Washington, DC at the time, didn't bother to show up to cast a vote on a bill that would have provided new funding for renewable energy. The new funding was approved by the Senate, but the measure failed to reach the 60 votes needed to override Bush's threatened veto.
The vote was 59-40, with McCain the only Senator not to vote (both Obama and Clinton got back to the Senate to make their votes).
So McCain, all by HIMSELF, scuttled important new funding for renewable energy.
This is some of the back story Ellen is talking about. Hopefully, the mainstream media will start doing their jobs soon and expose the hypocrisy of John McCain's candidacy, on this and many other issues.

Thanks for the reply anon 1:07. Facts help with any discussion.
I never went away. I did seem to go through a period here where my comments were being immediately deleted by Ellen. Completely. As though they never existed.
Never did get an explanation for that behavior.
I read many blogs. Some are arch conservative. Some are arch liberal. This is the only one where "freedom of speech" is selectively employed by the moderator/blog author.
Maybe she has recently changed her policy.

Lou,
As long as you talk about facts, I'm sure you'll be welcome here.
I hope you'll keep posting.

All the votes are easily found on Thomas. There is also a long list of missed McCain environmental votes on the League of Conservation Voters website. The information is all over the place, common knowledge, so no need for me to reprint here. McCain like Kirk is desperate, McCain is lying about his environmental record and oddly making more republican enemies than Democratic friends with his fake plan. Kirk is again lying about the Internet and forgets that kids have to eat before they can go onto the web. Looks like it's Obama and Seals for November.

If Lou ever made a real point it would be more interesting. He just plays the republican attack game confronting the truth with nothing. He cannot defend McCain here because the facts don't support it, so he attempts to play on folks lack of knowlege on the issues and pretend other candidates have the same problem McCain's record has. It's no different than the swift boaters attacking Kerry's most honorable Vietnam War record when their candidate Bush was the biggest military service slacker in the history of this nation. It's all very tiresome and not worth any of our time.
