Mark Kirk Claims to be Pro-Choice But His Support for Anti-Choice Candidates Puts Not Only Abortion Rights, But Also Contraception Rights At Risk

Monday, Mark Kirk almost broke his arm patting himself on the back for his pro-choice subterfuge with planned parenthood. We've already pointed out on this blog that despite his claims, he has financially supported anti-choice candidates. Now, he's supporting anti-choice John McCain (he's raised $100,000 - $250,000 for McCain) who is likely to support the current decision at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to classify common forms of contraception like birth control pills, and IUDs as abortion. The classification is important because it will allow healthcare providers to refuse to provide contraception to requesting women and prevent low income women from obtaining contraception from federally-funded family planning services, like Medicaid and Title X. See here too on McCain willingness to include stem cell research in his guaranty to the anti-choice crowd.

If Mark Kirk was really pro-choice, he'd refuse to support the supporters of this plan to end the availability of safe and effective birth control in this country.

If you care about the health, safety and self-determination of your mom, daughters, grandaughters, nieces and neighbors, it's time to start paying attention to the real effect of Mark Kirk in a safe congressional seat.

Great post, Ellen. Completely right.

A bunch of personal attack ads coming soon from Kirk. He must be really scared to sink that low for the first time. Ads are courtesy of Anthem Media (from Texas, of course), friends of Karl Rove, Swift Boaters for Truth, etc.

Well, it looks like the DCCC is going to invest $1.4 million against Kirk. That will help against the fundraising Kirk has spent all his time on in the last two years.

1. Abortion didn't get gone when we had a gop congress and gop white house. It won't happen now. This kind of scare politics died along with the macarena in the 90's. Also 7 of the 9 supremes are gop made and I still see roe vs wade around.

2. By GOP standards anthem is pretty tame. Trust me when and if Republicans decide to lay a punch you will know because you can feel it.

3. Don't get too pumped about this dccc ad buy. It amounts to every voter in the district seeing 15 minutes of anti-mark bombshells. The problem with this is that the gop and bush bashing is nothing new. The president has been in the tank for 4 years and he's not coming back, so if voters haven't dumped mark after all those bad stories it's hard to see what 15 minutes will do. anti-abortion spin hasn't worked, iraq is better off, energy dan already screwed up and he's to the left of mark on israel. Mccain is the most moderate guy we've run in ages.

My bet is they smack mark on energy money and w and dan airs some obama ad talking about how great a guy he is and how he wants him in congress the last weekend before the election.

what else you got? I am guessing the dccc has vetted mark for improprieties.

anonymous 9:07 is just another gop staffer whistling in the dark. as for improprieties, how about voter suppression and extortion from the 2006 campaign? As a former kirk supporter, I will never vote for him again after watching him stoop so low. we need leadership, not just someone sliding by under the radar.

Again, another member of the lake county republican central committee unable to accept the slightest amount of dissenting dialogue.

The point he's trying to make still shows how despicable they are in lying to their own supporters about their intent. They never had any intention of fully reversing Roe v. Wade because it's just about the only thing that gets republicans out to vote any more apart from racism and other notorious hatreds.

However, the more important point is that they have and will continue to whittle away at women's self determination rights enough to do some real harm. It's already happened and it is harder and harder to get a legal abortion and women have really been refused birth control. The specific matter in the post is a real HHS regulation that will go into effect and will be enforced by an executive who thinks he's unitary unless it's stopped. Mark Kirk won't do anything to stop it because despite his window dressing, he's politically married to the anti-choice extremists and a huge portion of the the money flow of republican party campaign contributions depends upon it. Kirk stand for nothing but campaign contributions and that's what needs to be remembered.

I don't understand women who vote republican. Republican men do not have women's best interests at heart. I feel so sorry for Cindy McCain. She walks two feet behind him as he totally ignores her. The look on her face is grim. I want to say to her, Cindy, it is your money, you do not have to do this.

I have never seen Mark Kirk's wife, I wonder if she agrees with his agenda?
