Mark Kirk had a tear in his carotid artery and an Ischemic stroke on the right side of his brain over the weekend. He apparently got to the hospital on time and they were able to quickly relieve brain swelling through surgery. Per the articles I have read, his prognosis is generally good, but it appears he will face some rehab work to get his left leg and arm properly working again.
Since Mark is my age, it made me think about diet and exercise and that my age peers are not immune to health problems. It's something to discuss at our mini-Facebook high school breakfast reunions where I should be ordering the oatmeal and not eggs.
However, this was a tear and not a clog in the artery. From researching Kirk's specific issue, it appears possible that his condition was precipitated by some sort of trauma to the area. It can also be caused by an underlying arteriopathy having to do with hypertension. I have not had all that much personal contact with him, but Kirk always looked like he was in fairly good shape. It goes to show that you never know.
Good thing for health coverage and the speedy care and the rehabilitation services it will provide. I wish everyone had it.
Best wishes, Mark. My cat is a pretty good friend to me when I'm sick. Pets can help a person focus on the positive aspects of life. I wonder if Kirk still has that little Shih Tzu . Mark, let me know if you are currently petless and want to borrow the Democat.
